Reversion to Simpler, Single-Purpose Technology

Exploring the need for technology that does one thing well, respects privacy, and doesn't compete for attention.

This note contains early-stage thinking and incomplete ideas. Expect rough edges and evolving thoughts.

I'm in early stages of thinking about a reversion to simpler and more single-purpose technology.

The Problem

Modern devices have become overly complicated. TVs are a prime example—each company wants to capture the platform UX, turning what should be a simple display device into a complex ecosystem.

In order to maximize revenue and features, companies have tried to invade privacy and don't respect the user's attention. The device that should just show content has become a battleground for platform control.

The Hope

I'm hopeful from comments from Palmer Luckey that he'll start something up in this space. There seems to be growing recognition that simpler, purpose-built devices might be the answer.

Open Questions

  • What does a truly single-purpose TV look like?
  • How do we balance simplicity with necessary features?
  • Can privacy-respecting devices be economically viable?
  • What other devices need this treatment?

Status: Seedling—very early thoughts, watching for developments.
